Mike is one of three Heart and Music men to hail originally from the North East. He has always had a passion for musical theatre and his first performance was at the age of 10 when he played Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He began playing the guitar in primary school and, whilst studying languages at University, embraced the opportunity to work abroad in Bavaria as the resident folk singer in a bar. Mike arrived in Milton Keynes in 1988 to take up a teaching post and, since then, he has continued to teach and to provide educational consultancy in Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire.

Mike has balanced the challenges of his ‘day job’ by performing and directing for many local companies. His favourite roles include George in Sunday in the Park with George (Into Sondheim), Jack in Into the Woods (Into Sondheim), Adam in Children of Eden (MKAOS), The American in Chess (MKAOS), Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls (Company MK) and Tobias in Sweeney Todd (Company MK). Mike also enjoys discovering and exploring unusual and obscure musicals – in 2006 he directed one of the first UK productions of Seussical (MKAOS). Another ‘find’ was the song Heart and Music from William Finn’s A New Brain – this catchy 10-part song from a strange little musical has become our ‘signature tune’ and our name!

Mike loves the friendship and support of everyone involved in Heart and Music.
